Dimapur, April 24: A conservation activist group Green Succession of Nagaland state (Green-Sons) has served a seven-day ultimatum to the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) to rectify its power grid lines from Doyang Hydro Electric Project (DHEP) Doyang to Dimapur district. Failing to do so will compel the organisation to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against PGCIL, the organisation has warned.
The representation to the PGCIL comes after a 15-day ultimatum that was served to the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (Neepco) at Doyang on April 8 to ‘rectify anomalies’ with regard to an incident that reportedly occurred on April 6 evening during which two adult elephants were said to have been electrocuted, at Baghty in Wokha district.
The Green-Sons’ chairman Jess Murry had also cautioned that if the Neepco failed to do as demanded by the group, the company’s power grid line would be cut and for which the nongovernmental organisation shall not be held responsible. It was reported that there was no response to this.
Murry pointed out that “electrocution of elephants is not a new incident and the transmission of electric current have caused danger not only to wild animals but to humans as well while environment has been disturbed by the transmission line that has been installed not in standard height.”
The representation addressed to the Dimapur PGCIL general manager/officer-in-charge on Wed. April 24 stated: "You are aware that a couple of elephants were electrocuted on Oct. 24 2018 at Sanis caused by the power grid line for which you were notified by Forest department, govt. of Nagaland on Nov. 2 2018 for early ratification and elevation of the power grid line yet no action has been taken by the PGCIL which led to cause wildfire by the electric spark from the grid line at Sanis in the month of Feb. 2019 and the recent electrocution of another couple of elephants on April 7 2019 from the same spot at Sanis."
The organisation’s chairman Jess Murry said that the PGCIL was ‘adamant and neglecting’ said issue.
It was for said reason that the Green-Sons was submitting the representation urging the company to rectify ‘within seven days starting from today failing which they will file a Public Interest Litigation against PGCIL after seven days,’ the updates stated.
