IMPHAL, April 4
The ruling Congress in Manipur today launched a sit-in protest here against the BJP-led government at the Centre accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of toppling Congress governments in Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president TN Haokip slammed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for ‘misusing’ Article 356 of the Constitution in toppling Congress governments.
The BJP is alleged to have fomented rebellion against Arunachal and Uttarakhand governments to topple them recently. The sit-in was held in front of the main gate of Congress Bhavan organized by MPCC.
The demonstration was part of the nationwide protest staged by Congress against Modi for allegedly being a de facto dictator mistreating democratically elected governments.
Haokip said the Modi government has been constantly threatening Congress-ruled states since it came to power abusing the Constitution to topple them. Ministers, MLAs and members of MPCC took part in the protest.
Manipur’s Okram Ibobi Singh headed Congress government is currently facing crisis after weeks of revolt by 25 party MLAs on the demand of a major Cabinet reshuffle. The government took office in 2012.
The dissidents want the Ibobi government to replace and dismiss10 of 12 ministers and induct them into his ministry. The 60-member assembly’s ministerial number is only 12 including the Chief Minister.
