Our Correspondent Diphu, Feb. 10 (EMN): A joint delegation of Congress leaders led by Dima Hasao District Congress Committee’s president, Nirmal Langthasa, and Congress leaders from east and west Karbi Anglong district Congress Committee met with the Congress President Rahul Gandhi at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in New Delhi on Feb. 7 Wed. According to Joel Sengyung of the social media cell of Dima Hasao District Congress Committee, the delegation submitted a memorandum to the Congress chief about the proposed scrapping of Article 244 (A) of the Indian Constitution by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Article 244 (A) is a special insertion in the Indian Constitution which is a constitutional provision for creation of an autonomous state within the state of Assam comprising the hill districts of Assam namely Dima Hasao, and east and west Karbi Anglong and is categorically mentioned. Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju had stated in the parliament that the present BJP-led Assam govt. had sent a proposal to do away with Article 244 (A) and the autonomous state. It is to be noted that BJP leaders LK Advani and Rajnath Singh had assured creation of an autonomous state during their poll campaigns but none has materialised so far. ‘Our MP Biren Singh Engti has shown sincerity and move for a bill on the issue namely Assam Reorganisation (Karbi Dimanchal) Bill 2016, as a Private Members Bill. The move by the BJP to scrap Article 244 (A) is a violation of Constitutional Rights of the Hill peoples and (is) anti-constitutional,’ Joel Sengyung said.
