DIMAPUR — Echoing a recent demand raised by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) has urged the state government to immediately introduce a landlord–tenant registration system across Nagaland.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the CNCCI maintained that the absence of such a mechanism has allowed unscrupulous individuals to exploit loopholes by posing as businessmen and renting residential or commercial properties under false pretences.

It stated that several of these individuals have engaged in illegal and unethical activities, thereby tarnishing the image of the business community.

In some instances, shops and business premises were reportedly taken on rent with claims of establishing genuine enterprises. After gaining the trust of consumers, the individuals allegedly absconded with large sums of money collected as advance payments for goods and services.

Losses in such cases have run into crores of rupees, the CNCCI informed.

It further pointed out that holding culprits accountable has proven difficult, as victims are often left without proper documentation or proof of identity of the fraudsters, making it challenging to even lodge formal complaints with the authorities.

Reiterating its appeal, the confederation said that the introduction of a landlord–tenant registration system would help protect the interests of both the general public and genuine business operators in the state.
