Besides killings, rape continues to haunt women and girls. The latest instance being that of the reported rape of a minor girl, said to be a mentally-challenged girl, by a policeman. Various community organizations issued statements to the media denouncing the alleged crime.
Gorkha Student’s Union of Dimapur
The Gorkha Student’s Union of Dimapur (GSUD) has vehemently condemned the rape of the minor girl, said to be aged around 16 years. The rape reportedly took place in the capital town of Kohima on January 30 and perpetrated by a policeman, reported to be one Issac Semy of Kandinu village.
A statement appended by the GSUD on Thursday, February 4, that “such anti-social activities and elements disturbing the law and order situations by trouble-makers would not be accepted in the Naga society.”
The organization has urged the law enforcing agencies to bring the culprit before justice and award befitting punishment to the criminals as per the law of the land. The rapist should not be released on bail, the union stated.
The GSUD has expressed deepest condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
Sepfuzou Colony Welfare Board, Sepfuzou Youth Organization
In another press release, local community organizations from Kohima , the Sepfuzou Colony Welfare Board and the Sepfuzou Youth Organization, issued a press release on Thursday, denouncing the alleged crime. The two organizations vehemently condemned the “sinful and shameful crime” committed by Issac Semy.
“The perpetrator of this kind of crime on children with special needs to be given exemplary action as per laws so that no person dares to commit such crimes in future,” the joint press resale from the board and the youth organization stated.
Middle Bayavü Colony Board
Likewise, the Middle Bayavü Colony Board of Kohima has also condemned the alleged rape. The alleged victim is a resident of the colony and is “mentally disordered”, a press release from the board stated on Thursday.
“This barbaric act which was committed by a police personal in full uniform has brought utmost shame to the department whose primary duty is to protect and safeguard the people. The board request the concerned department, the district administration and the government of Nagaland to give befitting punishment to the culprit,” the press release stated.
Also, the Panchayat of Sepfüzou colony, Ward No.-1 of Kohima where the culprit was said to be residing at the time of the crime, has been requested to ‘deal with the culprit sternly.’
“We, the resident of the Middle Bayavü Colony Kohima sympathies with the victim and her family,” the board added.
Association of Gorkha Baptist Churches of Nagaland
The Association of Gorkha Baptist Churches of Nagaland also denounced the crime. “It is atrocious to hear such an inexcusable and horrendous crime committed to the minor girl with disability in Kohima on January 30 by a police personal, which is charged with the responsibility to provide protection to the citizen. It is disheartening and very unfortunate that our own sisters, daughters are no more save in our own homes,” the press release from the association issued on Thursday stated.
“Association of Gorkha Baptist Churches Nagaland (AGBCN) strongly condemns such inhuman act and urges the law enforcing authority that the accused is brought to justice, and awarded with befitting punishment.”
Dimapur District Disabled Persons Parents’ Association
Dimapur District Disabled Persons Parents’ Association (DDDPPA) has strongly condemned the alleged rape committed on a mentally retarded disabled minor girl, by one Isaac Semy, a police personnel, on January 30 in Kohima.
Stating that this was the second instance of rape committed by men in uniform in recent times, DDDPPA president Akum Ezung and general secretary Joyla Pradhan called for uncompromising, severe punishment for the culprit and appealed to the society to condemn the incident.
In a separate statement vice president Zakeikedo Angami, condemning the incident appealed to the state government for adequate compensation and logical action. The parents association would not remain a silent spectator declared the vice president and threatened of continued struggle under guidelines of Parivaar India and Nation Confederation of Parents’ organization (NCPO) for Disabilities, if the situation demands.
