IMPHAL — The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), a Kangpokpi-based organisation, on Monday announced the immediate withdrawal of its emergency blockade on National Highways 2 and 37 after reaching an understanding with government authorities.
In an order issued on Monday, the committee said the blockade, which had been in force since 4 pm on June 21, was being lifted with immediate effect in the interest of public safety and peace.
Earlier in the day, more than 180 goods-laden trucks were stranded at Jiribam town in Manipur following the blockade imposed by civil society organisations based in Kangpokpi district.
Jiribam, located about 220 km west of Imphal near the Manipur-Assam border, serves as a key transit point for supplies entering the state.
The emergency blockade had been called from 4 pm on June 21 to protest ongoing security operations in Kuki-Zo inhabited areas. The organisations alleged that the recent operations were selective in nature.
The blockade had severely disrupted vehicular movement along the two national highways, which are the state's primary supply routes.
With the withdrawal of the protest, normal movement of vehicles is expected to resume.
