Dimapur, April 10 (EMN): Students of Sakus Mission College (SMC) and Pranabananda Women’s College (PWC) showcased the vibrant culture and traditions on the occasion of cultural day programme held in their respective colleges.
The English, Sociology and History departments of Sakus Mission College, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organised a cultural day programme on April 9 on the theme “Nurture culture.” An update from the college stated the programme was organised to create awareness on the need to nurture and showcase the rich cultural heritage of the forefathers.
Speaking on the theme, the college assistant professor of English department, John Zarench, stated that the meaning of the word ‘culture’ implies ‘to cultivate’ or ‘to honour’ the dress, food, language , traditional industries and ethical culture taught by the older generations. He pointed out that Nagas culture is on the brink of extinction as they are being replaced by other foreign cultures.
He reiterated that one should not only nurture culture on festivals but also in daily lives. He further impressed upon that it should not be a choice but a responsibility to nurture culture and hand them down to the future generations.
Altogether, 11 troupes dressed in their colourful traditional attires enthralled the gathering which consisted of special invitees, alumni and parents. Indigenous food and brew stalls and display of Naga artifacts and Naga indigenous games were other highlights of the event.
It stated that the Ao Naga troupe was declared the best performers and Onglung Phom from 4th semester, won the war cry contest. In the talent show competition, Minpong Konyak from 2nd semester, Imsur from 6th semester, and Shanti Konyak won the first, second and third positions respectively.
Meanwhile, Pranabananda Women’s College (PWC), Dimapur, also celebrated its annual cultural day on April 7 on the theme “Share our similarities, celebrate our differences.”

Speaking at the programme, the college principal, Dr. Santosh Kumar, has emphasised on the importance of celebrating cultural day in educational institutions and the need to recognise similarities as humans before focusing on differences.
The main highlight of the day was the folk dance competition in which seven groups presented the dances of seven communities. It stated that students from different communities performed the folk dance of the other community with an objective to inculcate the values of awareness, respect and accommodation in the students towards other cultures. Another highlight of the celebration was the display of traditional attire of different communities.
It added that the Rengma cultural troupe represented by the BA 6th semester section B emerged as the winner of the competition, followed by the Kuki cultural troupe of BA 4th semester, section A and the Bihu cultural troupe of B.Com as first and second runners-up respectively.
