Dimapur, April 17 (EMN): Directorate of Higher Education organised a one-day orientation programme on “Choice Based Credit System” (CBCS) for all the principals of secular colleges at Kohima on Friday.
An update from the department stated that the programme scheduled at De Oriental Grand was conducted on virtual mode owing to the second wave of Covid -19 pandemic.
Vice chancellor of the Nagaland University (NU), Prof. Pardeshi Lal, who graced the inaugural session as the special guest, has highlighted the importance of the CBCS. He has appreciated the concern of the department of Higher Education and academic leaders for their urge to pursue quality education.
In his address, the vice chancellor stated that the root of the quality of leadership that the nation is building upon comes from educational institutions.
The inaugural session was chaired by the secretary of Higher and Technical Education, Anoop Khinchi, while the vote of thanks was proposed by the director of Higher Education, Dr. Apeni Lotha.
An update from the department stated that the director of IQAC, NU Lumami, Prof. Dipak Sinha, spoke on “Syllabus under choice based credit system: Implementation and guidelines” during session 1, which was chaired by Dr. Lily Sema, principal of Kohima Science College (Autonomous) Jotsoma.
In session-II, Dr. RK Behera, academic dean of St. Joseph University, Dimapur, spoke on “Practical aspect of implementation of CBCS” chaired by Dr. Asakho Hibo, principal of Japfu Christian College and president Nagaland College Principals Forum.
It stated that Dr. Katoni Jakhalu, additional director of Higher Education, delivered the concluding remarks.
It mentioned that the University Grants Commission (UGC) had introduced the Choice Based Credit System popularly known as CBCS and made it mandatory for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to implement it. It added that currently three autonomous institutions in Nagaland have already introduced the CBCS adding that Nagaland University would also be introducing it from the next academic session.
It added that UGC has formulated various regulations and guidelines to improve the higher education system and quality across the country.
It stated that CBCS is a student-centric approach, which would provide a convenient and effective teaching-learning platform. CBCS was initiated by UGC to bring in flexibility for the knowledge seeker from a list of elective, core and soft skill courses. It added that to maximise skill based education and enhance student learning outcomes in terms of their grades as well as skills, the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) has made crucial changes in the traditional teaching-learning system in India. It further mentioned that the government has decided to introduce a unique concept of Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) coupled with CBCS to facilitate the best education journey to the career-oriented students of the 21st century.
