Imphal, Jan. 13: Some of the northern Indian states are experiencing some of the coldest day in six years. The cold wave also arrived here with the mercury level plunging to 3.9 degree Celsius in Imphal, according to the Indian Meteorological department at Imphal International airport on Friday.
Similarly even though the minimum temperature was recorded 4.2 degree by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research(ICAR) in Lamphelpat, a wetland area in Imphal on Friday, residents in Imphal continues to feel chilly wind throughout the day and night.
The maximum temperature recorded was 21.2 degrees, sources in the ICAR in Imphal said. The minimum temperature of the state, which has been around 6 degree Celsius on an average since beginning of this month, has gradually gone down since Wednesday, recording around 5 degree Celsius.
Besides the state’s capital, the severe cold wave conditions also prevailed in other hill district headquarters of the state, residents informed. The people in the hill districts have also been experiencing chilly winds during the past two days.
Similarly, hilly Ukhrul, around 84 km north from here bordering Myanmar, has been experiencing unusual cold in the last few days.
“We’ve been facing cold winds during the day and at night in the last three days. So most of the people stays indoor though some of them moves around with warm clothes,” said a resident of Ukhrul.
Echoing a similar sentiment, residents of Tamenglong and Senapati districts are also experiencing similar conditions. As a result, use of charcoal is said to be on the rise during the past few days.

Aizawl records coldest day ever in recorded history
The mercury in Aizawl dipped to a record low of 3.2 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest day in the state ever since the MeT office was setup in the region.
The maximum temperature was recorded at 23.2 degrees Celsius, while the minimum stood at 3.2 degrees Celsius yesterday, Scientific Officer K Lalrammuana said, adding that 3.2 degrees Celsius was the lowest ever temperature recorded in Aizawl.
“Yesterday’s reading broke the record of minimum temperature of 3.7 degree Celsius recorded on January 24, 2016 while the lowest maximum temperature ever recorded was on January 21, 2016 at 19.9 degree Celsius,” Lalrammuana said.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has predicted that the mercury is likely to go down further in the next 48 hours.
