Veteran educationist and NMA leader Vilanuo Angela Yhome passes away; Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio pays heartfelt tribute and condolences
DIMAPUR — Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday expressed grief over the passing of veteran educationist, women's leader and peace advocate Vilanuo Angela Yhome, describing her death as an irreparable loss to Nagaland and the wider Naga community.
In a condolence message, Rio said Yhome, who passed away on July 31, was an eminent educationist, social leader and tireless advocate for peace and women's empowerment whose contributions extended far beyond her career in government service.
The chief minister said that she served the state government with distinction as a teacher and administrator before retiring from service.
Beyond her professional career, Yhome played key leadership roles in several religious, social and civil society organisations. She served as a member of Bible Review Committee, a board member of the Council of Catholic Women of India, president and later advisor of Nagaland Catholic Women Association, and was serving as president of Naga Mothers' Association until her demise.

She also served for many years on the Board of Cradle Ridge Centre, was a member of Naga Mothers' Peace Committee, general secretary of Tenyimi Women Union, and an active member of Global Naga Forum.
Rio noted that Yhome was also the first woman to serve as Joint Secretary of Lhisema Council, Kohima village, and later as its Secretary, reflecting her commitment to public service and the advancement of women in community leadership.
Describing her as "a distinguished daughter, an inspiring leader and a compassionate voice for peace and social justice," the chief minister said her passing was an immense loss not only to her family but also to the Angami community and the people of Nagaland.
He said Yhome's legacy of selfless service, integrity and compassion, together with her contributions to education, women's empowerment, peace-building and community leadership, would continue to inspire future generations.
Rio, on behalf of his family, conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that they be granted strength, solace and courage to bear the loss.
