Kohima, June 15 (EMN): Kohima Municipal Council building foundation stone was laid by Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, Chief Minister, at KMC Building site, Kezieke, Kohima, on Thursday morning.
Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, in his speech said, Kohima Municipal Council should be the model for all the municipal and town council in Nagaland. On KMC building site, he mentioned that in the year 1990, a major landslide occurred and the area was badly affected but now with the protection of the streams down below from Urban Development, he felt that the area has now become stable.
“This place that we have chosen for KMC building will be important spot for all kind of developmental in the years to come. This will become the centre of activities for all developmental works in future,” stated Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu
Speaking about the history, he said that Kohima is the first town in Nagaland which is about 138 years old saying, “We are supposed to develop far from what we have today.” However, noting on the history, he said Kohima didn’t have a pleasant history for many years, during the year 1944, the entire house in the town was destroyed and not a single building was left during the Second World War when the Japanese came.
With time, he further stated that the people came and started living again, but before they could fully develop themselves to start a living. He said the disturbances of the Naga political problems started again in the early 50’s and even today, ‘we are expecting a settlement. For many years we don’t have peace because of this development couldn’t take place as desired, he stated.
However, he said that today we have the semblance of peace, we can march forward with the development we have in hand today.
Chief Minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, touching on the issues of 33% women reservation, said that government is considering writing the whole act again but maintained the decision was yet to be taken.
“Now government is contemplating that we must rewrite not amend the whole act and to start everything afresh but that decision is yet to arrive,” said Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu
The municipal council act was passed by the Nagaland assembly in 2001, the first election was held in 2004. But that at that time 33% reservation for women was not there. However, with the amendment of the Indian constitution by the parliament, the act was amended in 2006 with the 33% reservation for women. But the election was not held since then due to various complaints from the hohos and other organizations. “Till today we are yet to decide how best we can sail on smoothly,” said Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu.
