IMPHAL, December 29
Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh inaugurated and dedicated to people two 33/11 KV power sub-stations at Sinzawl in Thanlon subdivision of Churachandpur district and Sivapurikhal in Jiribam subdivision of Imphal East on Tuesday.
A boycott call was given by the Churanchandpur JAC against the inaugural function of the power sub-station at Sinzawl, bordering Mizoram. The Chief Minister’s team reached the two venues by a helicopter. No ministers, MLAs and officials were allowed to enter the venue by a large number of protesters who blocked several roads leading to the venue in Churachandpur.
The JAC has demanded that three ILPS Bills, passed by the state assembly on August 31 this year, should be withdrawn. It had said that no ministers, MLAs and government officials would be allowed to enter the district until the demand was fulfilled. The tribal communities in Manipur have dubbed the Bills as ‘anti-tribal.’
The functions were organised by Manipur State Power Company Ltd (MSPCL). Sources said the protesters prevented officials of the company to proceed towards the venue. Traffic was disrupted by strike supporters at New Lamka, Mission Compound and Bungbol.
Women protesters yesterday obstructed movement of government officials on Guite and Tipaimukh roads in the district.
Official sources informed that during the trip the Chief Minister was accompanied by Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing, Hill Areas Committee (HAC) Chairman Dr Chaltolien Amo and Parliamentary Secretary Vungzagin Valte.
