IMPHAL, March 31(EMN): Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh on Friday chaired cabinet meeting discussed the flash flood situation following the incessant rain in the last two and half days and decided to constitute an action committee to deal with the problem of flood in Manipur.
The steps has been taken after Manipur witnessed a record intense rainfall after a gap of 63 years which cause widespread flooding in many low lying areas of Imphal areas including the historic Shree Shree Govindajee temple and roads leading world’s oldest living pologround here. Thursday's rain fall crossed 100 mm within 24 hours which ia record after 1954, according to Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Lamphelpat sources.
State’s Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) Minister Letpao Haokip shall be the Chairman of the Committee and the Chief Secretary shall be the convenor. Heads of Departments of IFCD, Public health engineering, Public Works, Consumer affairs and food & Public Distribution, Minor Irrigation, Health, Secretary of Disaster Management and all Deputy Commissioners shall be the members. The Committee will monitor the flood situation and take actions for relief of the affected people.
IFC Minister Haokip also placed the flood report like level of rainfall during the last 24 hours in milimetre, water level of major rivers in metres and position of barrages and regulators. The main flood control room with telephone numbers- 2451550 and 2450195 was opened at Khoyathong to receive the complaints from the public.
An immediate measure of pumping out water from innundated area, cleaning of drainage and strengthening of river banks are being done by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department.
The Chief Minister instructed the Deputy Commissioners to visit the flood affected areas and to submit a report today. He also asked to find out the most affected areas for setting up relief camps.
The meeting discussed to provide safe drinking water and relief materials to the affected people. The Chief Minister expressed that precautionary measures should be taken up all the time for the welfare of the people.
Government directive: Manipur Chief Secretary O Nabakishore Singh has today instructed to all Administrative Secretaries that no file is kept pending on their tables or on the tables of their subordinate officers for more than one day and he also further advised to check punctuality in the office attendence of the employees.
It is worth to recall that Chief Minister has expressed for the timely disposal of files and punctuality in attendence, particularly for good governance and delivery of services to the public in a transparent mannner in the recent meeting with the Administrative Secretaries and Heads of Departments.
