Swine fever is a highly contagious disease affecting pigs of all ages. It is a very common viral disease of pig How Classical Swine Fever is spread 1. Infected by direct contact with infected pigs or their faeces or discharges body fluids 2. By pigs eating contaminated feeds 3. Contact from infected sow to their piglets 4. Pig coming in contact with contaminated shed, feeding/water trough Signs & Symptoms of Classical Swine Fever 1. High temperature 2. Loss of appetite 3. Eyelids are closed with discharges 4. Labored breathing and coughing 5. Sneezing 6. Constipation followed by diarrhoea 7. Vomiting 8. Red patches are seen in the ear, tail abdomen and inner part of the thigh 9. Abortions, still births and weak litters 10. Nervous signs like in coordination of body while walking, muscle tremor, paralysis and convulsion 11. Sometimes sudden death with few clinical signs Steps for prevention of Swine Fever disease 1. Vaccination of the piglet above 3 month followed by revaccination every 6 months 2. Always purchase your piglet, grower stock from a disease free stock and well known reliable source 3. The pig house should be always kept clean, dry and airy 4. Feed well balanced diet 5. Pig house, feeder and water trough should be thoroughly wash with water daily 6. Provide sufficient clean portable water daily 7. Remove left over feeds and water in the evening 8. Isolation of the sick pig from the healthy ones 9. Periodic deworming 10. Proper disposal of death pig by burial Immediately consult a Veterinarian or visit the nearest Veterinary Health Centre if your pigs are showing any of the above mention signs and symptoms for early detection and proper treatment.
