Dimapur, Sep. 21 (EMN): The first and only police station in Chumukedima, covering 20 villages and the town of Chumukedima, was inaugurated on Thursday. The police station is housed at Modern Complex, adjacent to the town’s weekly bazaar.
Director General of Police (DGP), LL Doungel, who inaugurated the police station said, “It is our way of reaching out to the public and if you want us to be strong, please lend us your support.” The police chief was of the opinion that quality policing could be achieved if members of the public render support to the police.
Commenting on the cosmopolitan nature of Chumukedima’s population, he said, “We have all tribes, shapes and sizes of people here and therefore policing in Chumukedima will not be very easy. It will be very complex, as complex as the number of people here. Police, working alone, will be able to help but no to the extent that you would like as to. Therefore one way to ensure good quality service is by rendering your support.”
“If you find aberration in the police side also, I think that is not to be condoned. That has to be pointed out. Because the tendency in any department is that we tend to get very insular, and then we tend to be very supportive of our own action, rightly or wrongly. That is the time when public should speak up,” he said,
This in turn, he pointed out, has resulted in a situation where “what we are having is a place where people are not very questioning, not very demanding. That is why a lot of departments can do without working or maybe half the work. And so if you want an active police department as well as the police station to function well, I think you should be very vigilant at the same time very supportive.”
On the flip side, the DGP pointed out that the police personnel should also ‘renew and update’ their knowledge to combat new challenges of crime – in the form of cyber and white-collar crimes.
