Dimapur, June 13 (EMN): Joining with the rest of the world, Childline Kohima has observed the World Day against Child Labour by taking a transact walk in and around the city.
The walk was undertaken to create awareness on the evils of child labour and the need for concerted and integrated approach to eliminating child labour and the need to create an enabling environment where a child should get all the protection and care needed for his or her overall development.
Childline team along with friends and volunteers of Childline visited vulnerable places like local vehicle workshops, hotels, shops, garbage dump areas etc. The object was to make a safety check on child labourer in those work places and to acquaint owners/ employers on child labour act and the consequences of violation of the act. The team conducted one to one interactions, small group meetings with the owners and workers and also distributed child labour related IEC material.
The second part of the programme was an awareness meeting conducted at Night Tuition Centre, D Khel in Kohima village, which attended by children, leaders and elders of the community. The highlights of the programme included screening of documentary film on child labour produced by Childline India Foundation and presentation of Child Labour Act.
It aims strive towards achieving elimination of child labour by 2025.
Significance of World Day against Child Labour
World Day against Child Labour is the Day when the world comes together to commit itself to eliminate all forms of child labour. Some of the factors which make the day very significant are:
• On this day, all the stakeholders reiterate their support for the fight against child labour.
• National governments, NGOs, employers and workers take a pledge to work for the elimination of child labour from employments which are dangerous and degrading for them.
• The day is to remind that it’s important for world to protect and take care of their children because on them the future of humanity depends.
• The day also reiterates the importance of schooling for children for their overall development.
• The observance of the day brings the focus of policy makers around the world towards the problems of child labour.
• The day also gives an opportunity to stakeholders to formulate policies and action plans to effectively eliminate child labour especially in the hazardous industries.
• At individual level, it reminds of the evils of child labour for the society and what is needed to be done for its abolition.
