DIMAPUR — Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio praised the outgoing Chief Secretary of Nagaland, Dr. J Alam, for his exceptional leadership and service during some of the most challenging periods in the state's history.
According to an update from DIPR on Wednesday, Rio recalled that the state “had gone through social unrest, starting from headhunting to war, followed by the Naga political issue, insurgency, AFSPA, etc., which manifested the complexity of Nagaland and its people.”
“Therefore, it is not easy for any bureaucratic officer to make decisions or give justice in such situational challenges. However, the outgoing chief secretary, with his wisdom and leadership quality, could manoeuvre such situations and defied all odds and obstacles in handling the issues exceptionally during his stint as the chief secretary of Nagaland,” Rio said.

Speaking at a farewell programme held at the State Banquet Hall in Kohima on Thursday in honour of Dr. Alam, the chief minister credited Dr. Alam for guiding the administration through several key moments, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the establishment of the state’s first medical college, and the launch of the State Solar Mission.
In his address, Dr. Alam expressed gratitude for the honour and responsibilities entrusted to him, especially during his time as chief secretary. Recalling his earlier posting as deputy commissioner of Tuensang in the late 1990s, he said the experience taught him calmness and resilience.
He highlighted the importance of trust between political leadership and bureaucrats and said that working in Nagaland had been one of the most enriching phases of his career. “My journey in Nagaland will continue to grow, not in designation but in spirit,” he said.
