Chenwetnyu village, under 45 Tehok Assembly Constituency in Mon district, made the distinction as the first among other villages in Mon district to achieve total rural housing (tin roofing), eradicate open defecation, and install total solar street lighting system. Chenwetnyu village, about 36 km from Mon town, is located bordering Myanmar.
The achievement on total rural housing (tin roofing) was inaugurated by the former Rural Development minister, Pangnyu Phom, on November 23, 2010, during the Mon district VDBs’ conference held in the village.
Interacting with visiting media persons, elated chairman of Chenwetnyu village council and president of Konyak village councils’ union, PM Nockpai, attributed the success to the joint efforts of the government and village people. He said government funded 50% through IAY and BRGF schemes, while the village council contributed equal amount towards achieving total rural housing in the village.
Remarkably, PM Nocpai said total rural housing could be achieved within a span of one year. It was necessitated in 2009 at a joint meeting of the village council and students’ organisation for the golden jubilee celebration of the village church.
The village planned to declare as ‘Green village’ by this year end. Accordingly, the village and students’ organization have undertaken tree plantation drive in and around the village.
The village council also decided to prohibit hunting animals and birds as well as fishing and be opened once in a year to keep alive the traditional practice of hunting.
Chenwetnyu village is also the first in Mon district to achieve total solar street lighting system in 2013. Solar street lighting system was installed by New and Renewable Energy department after completion of official procedures.
The credit to eradicate open defecation dated back in 1983-84 through a resolution adopted by the village students’ union to rear pig in an enclosed area.
Unlike most villages in Nagaland with multiple churches, Chenwetnyu still held its head high signifying unity in faith to own one church with 475 households and over 4000 population.
