Chakhroma Youth Organisation warns of strict action against unauthorised riverbed mining and rock washing in its jurisdiction
DIMAPUR — The Chakhroma Youth Organisation (CYO) has warned of strict action against unauthorised riverbed mining and the washing of rocks quarried from hillsides in rivers and streams across its jurisdiction, alleging that the activities continue despite a community resolution and a district administration order prohibiting them.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the organisation stated that the prohibition was based on a resolution adopted by the Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO), in consultation with village councils, on October 31, 2025, and a regulatory order issued by the deputy commissioner of Chümoukedima on November 3, 2025.
The CYO alleged that individuals, contractors and machinery operators had continued illegal extraction despite the directives and monitoring mechanisms put in place by the district administration.

It also raised concern over rocks and boulders quarried from hillsides being transported to river channels and washed in flowing water. The practice, it stated, caused siltation, contaminated downstream drinking and irrigation water sources and harmed aquatic life.
The organisation has prohibited the washing of such materials in any river or stream under Chakhroma jurisdiction with immediate effect.
Issuing a “final warning”, the CYO asked those involved to stop the activities immediately. It cautioned that violators could face severe penalties and confiscation of machinery, tools and transport vehicles.
The CYO also directed affiliated youth units and village monitoring groups to keep watch in their respective areas and report violations. Residents were urged to alert the CYO to any such activity.
