Dimapur, May 4 (EMN): The Chakhroma GB Union has requested the government of Nagaland to release the “commission” due to its members for the year 2018. In a statement issued on Saturday, the union sought the administration’s intervention towards redressing its plight. “The GBship/village chief (sic) is a very old institution which existed prior to the coming of the Nagaland government. A GB is selected by the villagers to represent them in assisting the government in administration and maintaining law and order. GBs are neither paid by the government nor do they work on hourly basis, but they are required to report to the call of duty any hour of the day without expecting any payment. “The little incentive that a GB gets is a red blanket once in two years and a little commission from the house tax collected from the villagers. But it is noted with great disappointment that the government has not released the said commission for the year 2018. This is a disgrace upon the government to take away even the little incentive that a GB gets, and is deemed as a deliberate attempt to add to our misery,” the statement read. According to the union, people will “lose faith in the government”—and it will become difficult for the GBs to execute their works—if remedial steps are not taken. “The CGBU therefore request the government to look into the matter and take necessary action at the earliest to enable the GBs to continue functioning with greater zeal and interest in their work,” it stated.
