Chakhesang Students’ Union slams contractor's negligence on NH-29 project, seeks action

DIMAPUR — The Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has expressed deep concern and indignation over the alleged continued negligence and unsatisfactory performance of the EPC contractor, M/s Ranta Infrastructure Projects Pvt. Ltd., in the ongoing construction of NH-29, Package-II (Chakhabama to Kikrüma).

In a representation to the Executive Director of NHIDCL, Regional Office Kohima, on Monday, the union stated that despite repeated appeals, representations, and even official actions initiated against the agency and the contractor, the ground situation continues to remain deplorable and hazardous for commuters.

The poor workmanship, lack of progress, and complete absence of accountability have caused immense hardship to the travelling public, transporters, and local residents alike, it stated.

The CSU reminded that earlier on May 14 during the consultative meeting convened by DC Phek, both the NHIDCL and EPC contractor M/s RIPPL had assured to repair and maintain the road for motorable travels throughout the monsoon season.

Additionally, the EPC contractor assured to resume construction works in full strength by second week of October, depending on favourable weather conditions.

The union went on to state that an RTI on physical and financial progress and details of the project had been separately filed on November 3 to have comprehensive understanding of the ongoing 2-lane project.

“It is deeply regrettable that despite numerous assurances and directions issued by both the contractor and NHIDCL, there has been no tangible improvement on the ground.

“The contractor has persistently failed to fulfil its contractual obligations, and NHIDCL, despite being the implementing authority, has failed to take effective corrective measures or penal action against this inefficiency. Such negligence and inaction are unacceptable for a project of national importance,” the union maintained.

The CSU demanded immediate and decisive intervention from NHIDCL to take stringent disciplinary and contractual actions against the erring contractor and to ensure that the work is expedited with visible progress and adherence to quality standards.

The union warned that if the situation continues to remain unattended, it will be compelled to initiate public agitation and democratic actions against the agency and the EPC contractor.

It cautioned that in such an event, the NHIDCL and the contractor would bear full responsibility for any consequences arising thereof.

The CSU urged that the matter be treated with utmost seriousness and urgency, and necessary measures be initiated without further delay to restore public confidence and ensure the successful completion of the vital road project.
