Government of India acknowledges demand for Indian Institute of Technology in Nagaland, boosts hopes for higher education growth.

DIMAPUR — The Government of India has reportedly acknowledged and given a positive response to the demand for establishment of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Nagaland.
In a press release, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) stated that Nagaland Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir has received an official response from Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India, regarding the establishment and strengthening of higher educational infrastructure in Nagaland.
As per the communication, the matter was raised during Zero Hour on December 4, 2025, concerning the allotment of land for the establishment of an IIT in Nagaland.
The Government of India stated that its current focus is on strengthening and expanding existing institutions and aligning them with the National Education Policy (NEP) to promote multidisciplinary and high-quality education.
It also highlighted that Nagaland already hosts key centrally funded institutions, including Nagaland University and National Institute of Technology (NIT) Nagaland.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), a total outlay of INR 1,292.16 crore has been approved for the period 2023-24 to 2025-26.

Under various phases of the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), 39 projects have been approved for Nagaland.
Total allocation amounts to INR 254.06 crore, including a central share of INR 229.57 crore.
Additionally, under PM-USHA, a total central share of INR 130.46 crore has been released to the State of Nagaland as of March 25, 2026.
Regarding the establishment of an IIT in Nagaland, the Ministry acknowledged that a request was received on January 1, 2025, which has been duly noted.
Further developments will be communicated in due course, the Ministry assured.
“While the Government has outlined ongoing investments and schemes, the demand for a premier institution like an IIT in Nagaland remains a matter of critical importance for the youth and future development of the state.
“Continued efforts will be made to pursue this issue at the highest level,” it stated.
