Manipur Governor and DoNER Minister discuss plans to establish the state as a global reference centre for polo.

IMPHAL — Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Union Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) Jyotiraditya M Scindia co-chaired a review meeting to discuss the development of polo and establish Manipur as a global reference centre for the game on Wednesday.
The meeting was held through video conferencing at the Conference Hall of Lok Bhavan, Imphal. The meeting reviewed proposals submitted by the state government regarding a comprehensive development plan for polo in Manipur.
According to an update, Scindia advised the team to structure the proposal in a phased manner and ensure talent from various districts is picked based on geographic clusters and linked to centres of excellence.
The governor assured that the suggestions would be incorporated into the forthcoming stages of planning and implementation. The meeting emphasised efficiency and result-orientated implementation to accelerate overall development in the state.

Manipur Chief Secretary Dr. Puneet Kumar Goel, Secretary to Governor Sumant Singh, and other senior officers were present during the review meeting.
Later, the DoNER minister confirmed the meeting on X, stating, “Participated in a meeting chaired by the Governor of Manipur, Sh. Ajay Kumar Bhalla ji, to discuss our shared vision of positioning Polo as Manipur’s unique global identity. To establish Manipur as a global reference centre for Polo, our discussions focused on key areas such as youth engagement, high-performance development, strengthening polo clubs through equipment and institutional support and collaboration with the Indian Polo Association.”
Mapal Kangjeibung, one of the oldest polo grounds in the world, is located in the heart of Imphal.
International and national teams, including players from the USA, Colombia, India A (Indian Polo Association), India B (Manipur), and India C (Chhattisgarh), competed for the championship title in the recently concluded 15th Manipur Polo International held in November 2025.
