Glasgow, May 20: Celtic have announced Brendan Rodgers will replace Ronny Deila as the club’s manager on a 12-month rolling contract, with the Northern Irishman to be unveiled in Glasgow on Monday.
Celtic confirm under-fire manager Ronny Deila will leave at end of season
Rodgers has seen off competition from David Moyes, Neil Lennon, Malky Mackay and Roy Keane. The former Liverpool manager will be viewed as an ambitious appointment by the Scottish champions, who are seeking to end an absence from the Champions League group stage dating back to 2013.
Rodgers has been out of work since leaving Anfield in October of last year. It was initially thought he would seek a new challenge abroad but has opted to move to Scotland. Dermot Desmond, Celtic’s main shareholder, played a key role in the recruitment process, including personal talks with main candidates in London at the start of this week.
Rodgers said: “I am absolutely delighted to be named Celtic manager. This is genuinely a huge honour for me. I have followed Celtic all my life and to be given this fantastic opportunity and to be part of such a truly great football club is a dream come true.
“I will give my new role everything I have and do all I can to bring our supporters exciting, entertaining and winning football.
