‘Increased public unrest signifies failed government’
DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 2: The increasing instances of grievance and unrest from the public against the state’s government are an indicator that the government has failed, a community organization has stated.
Likewise, the habitual use of force by the government indicates its ‘nervousness’ when it comes to issues of corruption, the Coordination Committee on Fuel Adulteration (CCoFA) has stated. The government leadership must step down on moral grounds, the public organization has declared.
The organization issued a press release noting the Nagaland government’s yet again use of force on peaceful public protests.
“The indication that the state of Nagaland is going awry and failing is perhaps indicated by rise in the grievances and discontentment of the general public in all spheres of life and the failure of the government to respond adequately and justly,” the organization observed in the press release.
Of late, the organization remarked, the response of the government in addressing issues of public concern “by resorting to usage of brute force upon peaceful protestors is indicative of the nervousness of the government on issues of misappropriation and corruption in the government.”
Reminding the government that its ‘habitual use of brute force’ was arbitrary and ‘highly illegal’, the organization denounced such recourse from the state and its agencies.
The organization cited a recent instance of the use of force by the government: the police used water cannons on protesting teachers in Kohima. The teachers had not been paid their salary for several months by the state.
“The brutality and high handedness o the government using water canon on peaceful demonstration led by NSSTA teachers who were only demanding that their salary be paid is the gravest of injustice meted out by a democratic government, acting more in an autocratic mold,” the CCoFA stated.
“CCoFA fears that although the government may have promised to pay the aggrieved teachers for now, it may be only a temporary reprieve after which the teachers will be again forced to resort to agitation in order to get their salary,” the organization stated.
“It is the opinion of Coordination committee on Fuel adulteration that the state government which is mired in controversy on mismanagement and corruption should step down on moral grounds.”
