KOHIMA — Sensing the lack of platform for the younger badminton players from the state, the Capital Shuttlers is organising ‘All Nagaland Summer Badminton Coaching Camp’ under the aegis of Nagaland Badminton Association and Kohima District Badminton Association.
Themed "Nurture them young", the month-long coaching camp will be held at Indoor Badminton Stadium Kohima.
Update this, President of Capital Shuttlers, Medokerhe Noho said the club has decided to organise the camp as young badminton players from the state are far lacking behind their counterparts from other states due to less exposure.
General Secretary Joseph Sumi said that the club has scheduled the camp during the summer vacation to ensure that it doesn’t disrupt the classes of students.
It will be conducted for various age groups, including under 10, under 15 years, under 19 years, seniors and veterans. Those interested can start registering at INR 1500 for one person and INR 1000 each for two from the same family. The last date for submission of forms is June 10.
Sumi, who has played badminton for 33-long years, said that it is one the most expensive games, adding that he also struggled because of financial constraints.
Pointing out that many, especially students cannot afford to buy badminton kits, he said the badminton game is not advancing in the state due to financial reasons.
As for the funding of the coaching camp, he said it is totally managed by the Capital Shuttlers, while expressing hope that other associations will also come forward and extend help.
Besides the camp, the Capital Shuttlers also informed that it would be organising All Nagaland Badminton Doubles League for the first time, for several categories -- men, women, mixed doubles, junior boys, junior girls, veterans 75+ and veterans 95+.
The event, which will be in league format, is expected to commence soon and the matches will be played only on Fridays and Saturdays. Those interested can register for INR 5000 by June 10. Meanwhile, it was informed that the schedule for the tournament is yet to be decided.
