Reaching out to the school dropouts and underprivileged youths, local nongovernmental youth group ‘CAN Youth (Community Avenue Network)’ on Friday undertook a community activity to create avenues through exposure trips. The program aims at giving school dropouts and underprivileged youths a space in social and economic fields to create own interests and also to instill a sense of responsibility for self development and development of society. On the first day of the two-day program, 36 youths from Toulazouma village, Soluophe village, Amaluma village, Bade village and Showuba village were taken out for avenue tour to Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre, Kudatech Still Centre and Nagaland Handloom and Handicraft Development centre, where the participants were highlighted of various avenues to start their own enterprise and training imparted by the concerned departments.
Encouraging the participants, the Deputy General Manager of Nagaland Handloom and Handicraft Development centre, Khukiye Chophy, told the youth to plan well before taking up any step. He said plan well and you will succeed. While reminding the youth that everything depends on them and how they execute their plan, the DGM also warned that entrepreneurship is not an easy task.
He also suggested the CAN youth of setting up a training centre for the school dropouts and under-privileged youth of the participating villages and also assured all possible help in technical inputs if the training centre is set-up.
Interacting with the youth in the Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre’s conference hall, Dr. Tolto Metha reminded that bamboo was the most naturally available natural resources in Nagaland. He suggested means and ways on how to earn a livelihood. He also highlighted to the participants the various training programs imparted given by the development agency.
Earlier, Jenpu Rongmei, chief functionary of CAN Youth said that the program was aimed to create avenues of self employment for the youths of Nagaland. While reminding that there are 65, 000 educated unemployed youths in Nagaland, Rongmei said that providing training randomly is not helping the situation of unemployment in Nagaland and suggested that training should be imparted according to the interest of individual person.
On the second day of the program, young agents of CAN Youth and volunteers will undertake field study to places like orphanage homes, rehab centres, destitute centres etc. The main objective of day two is to show their concern and love to friends who have not got any opportunity, orphanage children, children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, affected by drug abuse and alcoholic parents from downtrodden families.

CAN Youth stands for Community Avenue Network Youth which was formed in memory of late David (Babuna) who died as a victim of drug abuse at a very young age. The objective of the organization is to work with young children who are exposed and brought up in an abusive environment by the parents who either are alcoholics or drug users and also those who are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
The organization also strive to work for empowering youth, especially the drop out students and under privileged youth as they are the ones who are neglected, de-motivated, demoralized and most susceptible to anti-social activities. By inspiring them, the organization aims at working towards reversing and eliminating the trend of vulnerable youths turning into healthier, happier and more progressive society.
Working with the educated youth has been a part of the organization’s crux purpose as well, with these youths, the organization engaged them in various awareness, advocacy and other mega social events so that they get mould and develop personally and professionally as a sociable responsible youth. Also at the same time get to know more on the social needs, demands and challenges.
It may be mentioned here that, CAN Youth was earlier known as Young’s Club and it was awarded the Nagaland State Best Youth Club Award in 2013 by Nehru Yuva Kendra Nagaland. It also received the ‘Most Trusted Partner 2012’ from Model Blood Bank District Hospital Dimapur.
