Awareness programmes were organised across Nagaland to promote a drug-free society and legal awareness and mark International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

DIMAPUR — Government departments, district administrations, legal services authorities, educational institutions, health agencies, civil society organisations and community groups across Nagaland marked International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26 on the global theme, “World drug problem: Persisting issues, new challenges, innovative responses”.
The Office of the Commissioner of Excise observed the day by visiting schools and colleges in and around Dimapur, where officials displayed awareness banners highlighting the harmful effects of drug abuse among young people and society.
Officers and staff of the department also took a pledge reaffirming their commitment to combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking, according to an update.
The department also appealed to the public to assist in curbing drug abuse and illicit trafficking by sharing credible information on drug peddlers.

The Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), in collaboration with the Dimapur District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and Tetso College, organised a legal awareness programme at Lorin Hall, Tetso College.
Member Secretary Neiko Akami cautioned students against substance abuse and said drug addiction affects not only individuals but also society as a whole. He also highlighted the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and informed participants that Nagaland Police had registered 766 NDPS-related cases over the last four years up to June 2026.
Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary of Dimapur DLSA Atoka Achumi explained legal procedures under criminal law, while Panel Lawyer Zuchumpeni Ngullie spoke on the NALSA (DAWN) Scheme, 2025. Retainer Lawyer Sonile Seb outlined the hierarchy and functions of the Legal Services Authorities.
DLSAs across Nagaland, including Zunheboto DLSA, Kohima DLSA, Tuensang DLSA, Phek DLSA, Mon DLSA, Kiphire DLSA, Wokha DLSA, and Peren DLSA, also organised awareness programmes in collaboration with district administrations and partner organisations.
In Tseminyu, the district administration and Department of Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Tseminyu Village Youth Organisation, organised a rally under the Nasha Mukti Abhiyaan campaign followed by a public programme, anti-drug pledge and mass signature campaign.
In Mon district, four Targeted Intervention (TI) projects under the Nagaland AIDS Control Society, namely Turning Point Organisation, Shangsham Organisation, NNP and JACAOA, jointly observed the day with participation from government officials, educational institutions, community organisations and more than 200 participants.
N Nyamok Konyak, Extra Assistant Commissioner, Mon, was the special guest.
Speakers highlighted the evolving nature of the global drug problem and the importance of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, while students presented a skit depicting the consequences of drug addiction. The organisers reaffirmed their commitment to continuing awareness activities and promoting a drug-free society.
