Dimapur, Feb. 4: The Nagaland government has decided to approach New Delhi to demand that the state be exempted from the purview of Part IXA of the Constitution of India i.e., provisions associated with the municipalities.
The media cell of the Chief Minister’s Office issued a note on Saturday.
“In the aftermath of the stiff opposition to holding of elections to the Urban Local Bodies with 33% reservation of seats for women by tribal hohos in Nagaland, the Nagaland Cabinet has today decided to take the matter to the New Delhi to demand that Nagaland be exempted from the purview of Part IXA of the Constitution of India,” the CMO stated.The text read: “Taking serious consideration of the widespread concern expressed by various tribal hohos and other organisations with regard to certain provisions of Part IX-A of the Constitution relating to Municipalities, the State Cabinet, in an emergency Cabinet meeting tonight attended by special invitees comprising of legislators from all tribes of the State, decided to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister amend the Constitution in the next few days.”
The CMO stated that all the sixty legislators, both the Members of Parliament, the chairman and vice chairman of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland are to “submit the memorandum jointly and an early appointment with the Prime Minister has been sought.”
