Dimapur, May 7
Dimapur police led by Vilhousie Peseyie, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-I held an interactive session with Dimapur based business community at Commissioner of Police office today.
The meeting was attended by members of Dimapur Chambers of Commerce and Industries, Chumukedima Chamber of Commerce, East Dimapur Business Association, Business Association of Nagaland, Nagaland Medicine Dealers Association, Hazi Park Market Association and other various associations and entrepreneurs. The police included all ADCP/ACP and other field officers including the officers-in-charge of all police stations.
ADCP/ PRO Dimapur Police in a press note said the meeting was aimed at having an informal discussion on the current problems faced by the business communities and mechanisms through which police can improve their services. “Most speakers agreed that while extending their support for the reconciliation processing initiated by the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR), the process has also led to various factions of NPGs claiming legitimacy and thus impose taxes. The current situation called for a co-ordinated and collective step to tackle the problem instead of blaming the inactions of one another.”
The meeting highlighted the difficulties faced by the respective agencies and the need to co-operate with one another. The police also highlighted that 31 cases under extortion have been registered in the Dimapur district in the current year and 37 persons arrested in these connections. It also rued that the Crime Helpline which is operational as demanded by the business communities are not being utilized.
The house also discussed on the lack of stringent legislation to tackle the issue of extortion as most of the arrested persons were out on bail within no time under the current law and such have also been a source of discouragement to the business communities to come forth with complaints.
The interaction pointed areas where the police can improve and thereby build confidence amongst the business communities. The meeting also expressed the need for more interaction at regular intervals. The crime helpline numbers are again published for the information of the public: 7085055048, 7085055049 & 7085055043.
