KOHIMA — While the nation marked the 79th Independence Day with fervour and gaiety, Nagaland lost its Governor, La. Ganesan, who passed away in Chennai on Friday. He was 80.

According to Raj Bhavan Kohima sources, Ganesan breathed his last at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, at around 6.23 pm. He had been hospitalised on August 8 and was undergoing treatment.

Born in 1945 in the temple town of Tanjore—known as the granary of the South and erstwhile capital of the medieval Cholas—Ganesan hailed from an orthodox Brahmin family.

Before his gubernatorial roles, Ganesan was a senior leader of the Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party. Further updates from Apollo Hospitals and Raj Bhavan Kohima are awaited.
