DIMAPUR — In a swift turnaround, the group of landowners affected by the Kohima-Jessami two-lane road construction project has announced a temporary relaxation of the total blockade on National Highway-29, allowing public movement along the stretch.
A press release on Friday informed that the decision was taken an intervention from the deputy commissioner of Phek, the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO), and the Chakhesang Mothers’ Association (CMA).
According to the aggrieved landowners, their latest move was a gesture of goodwill towards commuters and the wider community, underscoring their commitment to peaceful protest and public welfare.

However, the landowners made it clear that all construction activities and operations involving the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) will remain suspended until a satisfactory resolution is reached regarding their pending compensation claims.
They reiterated that no further progress on the project would be permitted unless the compensation issues are fairly and adequately addressed.
“The relaxation of the blockade for public convenience signifies the landowners' commitment to peaceful protests and their consideration for the welfare of the community. While the general public can now travel along National Highway 29, the landowners stand firm in their demand for fair and timely compensation for the damages inflicted on their properties,” the statement read.
They also extended their gratitude to the deputy commissioner of Phek for facilitating dialogue and urged all concerned stakeholders to work towards a constructive and mutually acceptable resolution.
