Imphal, November 15: The indefinite economic blockade and subsequent demonetization of the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 note have hit Indo-Myanmar border trade while some schools in Imphal have been forced to close down following suspension of school van services.
Residents of the landlocked state have also started to buy cooking gas and petrol at exorbitant prices rates from the black market.
The indefinite economic blockade on National Highways in Manipur was called by United Naga Council. It began on November 1 in protest against the alleged plan of the state’s government to declare the Sadar Hills in Senapati district and Jiribam sub-division in Imphal East district as full-fledged districts.
Besides, the situation has been worsening thanks to the recent demonetization too. Hundreds of men and women have been spending no fewer than 4-5 hours in front of banks to exchange or deposit their old notes or withdraw a few hundred for their daily needs. The monetization has crippled normal business at the Imphal market since the last five days.
Also, around 250 empty trucks have already left Imphal on Monday to bring essentials from outside the state via the Imphal-Jiribam route. On the other hand, bank authorities here continue to work extra hours to serve the people since Wednesday.
