[dropcap]P[/dropcap]ersonnel of 7th Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) deployed at the residence Vice President of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee Sagolsem Achouba Singh was injured in a bomb explosion today morning. The residence of the state Congress leader was located at Wangoi Makha Thounaojam Leikai about 25km south of Imphal under Wangoi police station.
The incident took place when the IRB personnel L Herojit, a resident of Oinam Thingel in Imphal, tried to check a plastic bag (containing the bomb believed to be an improvised explosive device) by using a bamboo stick around 5.50 am today.
“We’ve registered a case and investigation is going on,” said a police official of Wangoi police station when contacted on phone. Police suspected the bomb could be an IED.The injured IRB man who sustained injury in his right hand has been taken to RIMS hospital for treatment. Later, he was shifted to the Shija Hospitals at Langol, sources said. The splinters of the explosion has damaged some portion of the GI sheet gate and nearby areas. This is the second such explosion that took place at the residence of the Congress leader Achouba who is also the vice chairman of Manipur Khadi and Village Industries Board.
The Congress leader and his family members were not at their Wangoi residence when the incident took place. Only the security guards and some of the house maids were found stationed at the residence.
The last explosion took place on February 16 this year. However, no one was injured during the incident.
The reason behind today’s blats was not known immediately. Besides, no armed group has claimed responsibility for the attack till the time of filing the report.
Meanwhile, the Wangoi Block Congress Committee has demanded clarification from the group concerned or party over the incident. Locals of Wangoi Makha Thounaojam Leikai also staged a sit-in protest against the incident at community hall.
