Dimapur, Oct. 2: In an attempt to transform waste zone into a public utility asset, state Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) and culminated with Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on October 2 at Midland, Dimapur.
BJYM has assured to adopt the road area within Dimapur Club. BJYM president Benjamin Yepthomi said that they would personally do the cleaning twice a week. Developments such as putting up rostrums, seats and other aspects would be maintained in future, he said adding detail plan is being worked upon.
Deputy commissioner, Dimapur, Sushil Kumar Patel, inaugurated the programme which was followed by signing of MoU between BJYM and DMC.
Minister of health and family welfare, S Pangnyu Phom, in his speech, urged the gathering to work hard and keep the city clean. He was of the view that citizens should come together, unite in deeds and set an example to the other parts of the districts.
He said, “Dimapur is the mirror of the Nagaland,” and “let our activities be spread to the other parts of Nagaland.”
Advisor of power and chairman Dimapur DPDB, Tovihoto Ayemi, in his short speech, said Dimapur has undergone lot of changes in the past four years particularly in the cleanliness programme. In order to continue the trend, he said, “one should make it a point to take the mission as a lifestyle because cleanliness is service.”
“It’s time we come together as one, come out and spread the message to keep our environment clean,” the advisor implored and added that if one have clean environment than one is living a healthy life. He has sought more efforts to clean the city and make it a better place to live in.
DMC administrator, Moa Sangtam, informed that Bharatiya Janata Party was the first party to join in “Better Dimapur” project. He lauded BJYM’s effort to adopt the place and was hopeful for better community participation in future.
Co-ordinator of Swacch Bharat, Khevishe Achumi, expressed gratitude to the district administration for allowing them to adopt the road. He hoped that if such trend continues, Dimapur will be a better place than ever. “Although we are lacking in many ways, let this be a starting point to grow ahead of others,” he said.
Chairman of Livingstone Foundation Higher Secondary School, Andrew Ahoto, had suggested a few ways to tackle the menace of wastes. He was of the view that Dimapur administration should lay down stringent rules such as imposing heavy fines to all those citizens who are found dirtying the vicinity. Further, he added that student unions and bodies could be the policing factor by inspecting the area.
Representatives from Jain Samaj, Bengali Samaj, Sikh Samaj, Rotary Club, Muslim Council, Vivekananda Welfare Association, Team Clean Dimapur, and others also attended the event.
