DIMAPUR — The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wokha Unit has strongly condemned the alleged “premeditated assault” on Mhomo Humtsoe, BJP candidate from Ward No. 8, Wokha Town Council, and two party observers.
According to a press release from the unit, the attack was reportedly carried out by supporters of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) at Tsumang-B during the urban local body (ULB) by-election in the early hours of June 16, polling day, at approximately 4:30 am.
The BJP unit stated that this act is not merely an assault on Humtsoe but a direct assault on democracy itself. It added that the incident exposes the frustration of the NPF, which has resorted to violence and intimidation in the face of imminent electoral defeat in the ULB by-election.

Detailing the facts of the case, the party claimed that Humtsoe, along with two party observers, was physically attacked by a group of identified NPF workers. The candidate sustained minor injuries. The incident occurred in the early morning hours and was intended to terrorise the candidate and BJP karyakartas and to prevent them from exercising their franchise freely, the release stated.
The BJP Wokha Unit further stated that this constitutes a clear case of criminal intimidation, causing hurt, and exerting undue influence on the electoral process under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. It added that it is also a gross violation of the Model Code of Conduct issued by the State Election Commission, Nagaland, under Section 31(1) of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023, which guarantees free and fair elections.
The unit has appealed to the people of Wokha, stating that such acts of violence have no place in a modern, civilised society. It urged the public to reject threats and violence to ensure good governance, change mindsets, and strive to live together in harmony despite political differences.
