IMPHAL — The BJP on Thursday announced the name of Adhikarimayum Sarda Devi as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha biennial election from Manipur.
Sarda Devi, who became the first woman president of the BJP's Manipur unit in 2021, has held several key positions within the party. Prior to leading the state unit, she served in various organisational roles at the national level.
The announcement comes ahead of the Rajya Sabha biennial election scheduled for June 18. Earlier, on June 1, Rohit Sapam, Secretary of the Manipur Legislative Assembly and Returning Officer for the election, issued the official notification for the poll.
According to the election schedule, the last date for filing nominations is June 8. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on June 9 at the Manipur Legislative Assembly, while candidates may withdraw their nominations until June 11.
Polling, if required, will be held on June 18 between 9 am and 4 pm, followed by the counting of votes at 5 pm.
The election is being held to fill Manipur's lone Rajya Sabha seat currently represented by Leishemba Sanajaoba.
His six-year term is set to expire on June 21, 2026, after having assumed office in June 2020.
Havildar killed during anti-drug operation
A havildar attached to the Thoubal district police commando unit was stabbed to death during an anti-drug operation in Thoubal district on June 3 night. Police have arrested the accused involved in the incident.
According to sources, the incident occurred when a civil-dressed team of the Thoubal district police commando unit was conducting an anti-drug operation based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of suspected drug traffickers at Moijing Leingoijin area under Thoubal Police Station at around 8.45 pm.
During the operation, the police team apprehended two suspected drug peddlers from the Moijing area and was proceeding to a nearby locality to arrest another suspect, the sources said.
However, a confrontation broke out during which one of the apprehended suspects allegedly attacked the havildar with a knife.
The injured havildar, identified as Khoirom Suresh Singh (39) of Yairipok Laimanai in Thoubal district, was immediately shifted to District Hospital, Thoubal, but succumbed to his injuries despite efforts to save him.
