Imphal, April 11 (EMN): After inspecting the Koirengei to Moirangkhom area of Imphal river dredging, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren on April 11 Wednesday inspected the river dredging works from Haoreibi Makha Leikai to Kiyamgei area.
Imphal river which originates from Senapati district passes through the thickly populated Imphal valley including the state capital before flowing to Myanmar in Manipur which used to flood as its riverbanks were usually breached during monsoon.
Considering the matter seriously, the state government started to take up river dredging works recently. So far 70 percent of the Imphal River dredging works has been completed and the remaining areas will also be covered before the onset of rainy season.
Inspecting the dredging works, N Biren Singh said that the once remaining areas are completed, the government is planning to take up dredging works of Kongba, Thoubal and Nambul rivers.
Biren was accompanied by Water resources minister Letpao Haokip, Revenue minister Karam Shyam during the day's inspection.
Expressing happiness over the voluntary removal of private properties which are being constructed along the river banks, he said the state government acknowledge such co-operation and support of the people to the initiative.
Dismantling and eviction of houses, shops and other unauthorised structures is being done apart from dredging of riverbeds and strengthening of embankments are being taken up by the state government to combat flash floods. The state witnessed five times flood in the state in 2017 and damaged crore worth properties.
Also, the Manipur CM appealed the people to extend their love and support to other developmental initiatives of the government being undertaken in the state.
The day’s inspection programme of Imphal River dredging was conducted from Haoreibi Makha Leikai to Kyamgei area.
Letpao Haokip appealed the general public to support and cooperate the initiatives taken up by the government to make the riverbeds clean by no throwing the garbage.
The Chief Minister’s inspection trip was attended by ruling MLAs Thokchom Satyabrata of Yaiskul, L Rameshwor of Keirao, Deputy Commissioner Imphal West Ningthoujam Geoffrey, Chief Engineer of Water Resources Ksh Pritam and other high ranking officials of the State Government.
