[dropcap]B[/dropcap]irdman leads the way in the Golden Globe nominations as it picked up seven nods, including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy of Musical for Michael Keaton.
Birdman has been winning over the critics ever since it started playing on the festival circuit at the beginning of the autumn, and was already the frontrunner when it come to the Best Picture Oscar - it has further solidified that status by also picking up nominations for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Edward Norton and Best Supporting Actress for Emma Stone.
Boyhood and The Imitation Game were the other big winners as they both picked up five nominations apiece: they will go head to head in the Best Motion Picture, Drama category.
That is set to be a tough one as Boyhood and The Imitation Game are nominated alongside Foxcatcher, Selma, and The Theory of Everything. While The Grand Budapest Hotel, Into The Woods, Pride and St Vincent are nominated alongside Birdman in the Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy category.
It has already been a great week for Brits Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne having picked up SAG nominations earlier this week, and they are set to go head to head again for the Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama gong.
Cumberbatch was recognised for his performance as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, while Redmayne got his nomination for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Steve Carell, Jake Gyllenhaal, and David Oyelowo complete what is an exciting and hard to call category.
Julianne Moore is the favourite to scoop the Best Actress gong for her performance in Still Alice, and she is joined by Jennifer Aniston (Cake), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), and Reese Witherspoon (Wild) - this is most likely set to be the line-up for the Best Actress Oscar.
However, Best Director looks set to be one of the most exciting categories - not to mention one of the toughest to call - with some top class filmmakers recognised for quality work.
Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Ava DuVernay (Selma), David Fincher (Gone Girl), Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman), and Richard Linklater (Boyhood) are all nominated.
