Diphu, June 03 (EMN): Binalakhsmi Nepram, renown writer and socialist from Manipur has successfully raised the rightful issue of Karbi people at the headquarter of the United Nation, New York.
Nepram met Dr. Chandra Roy Henriksen, the Chief of Secretariat United Nation Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) at U.N. headquarter and gave the memorandum sent by the people of Karbi Anglong on their long standing demands of Statehood and other major issues. She appraised the immense history of struggle of Karbi people and presented the UN official with a Karbi Traditional scarf (Poho).
According to the reports, Nepram told the UN about the rich history heritage and culture of the Karbis and appealed them to protect and nurture the tribe positively.
The UN convention on Indigenous People rights was passed in 2007 in order to protect indigenous people, lands, territories and future.
In returns the Hills Tribal League (HTL) Convenors Saising Rongpi and Khorsing Teron, Karbi Human Rights Watch (KHRW) Convenor Pankaj Teron and other social organisations has express their gratitude to the renown writer and socialist Binalakhsmi Nepram for highlighting the issue of the Karbis in the international forum.
