Imphal, Jan. 16 (EMN): Manipur’s Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Karam Shyam on Wednesday said a bicycle track will be introduced in roads of greater Imphal area. Preparation of a detailed project report is on in this regard.
Minister Shyam who also holds revenue portfolio was speaking at the inaugural function of Saksham 2019 –a month long capacity building program on conservation of fuel in a private hotel in Imphal.
The programs which is scheduled to continue till Feb. 15 next is organised by public sector oil and gas companies with Petroleum Conservation Research Association under the aegis of Ministry of petroleum and natural gas government of India, to create awareness amongst masses towards judicious utilisation and conservation of petroleum products along with use of energy efficient appliances and switching to cleaner fuels.
Continuing his speech, Minister Shyam who becomes the first minister in the state to attend his office by riding bicycle every Thursday since Nov. 2017 said, “As a political leader and as a citizen of the state, we must encourage and promote cycling.”
Stating that riding bicycle is a message to all the citizens about the importance of fuel conservation, minister Shyam who also holds the revenue portfolio appealed to the students and teachers attending the function to promote using bicycle for short distances.
State level coordinator Sinam Ibungoton Singh of Indian Oil Corporation Manipur division informed that depleting rate fuel is faster than the generation level. So conserving and preserving fuel should be pursued as a responsibility, he said. Fuel is non-renewable source of energy.
Manipur requires nearly 80 kilolitres of petrol, more than 200 kilolitres of diesel and 80 kilolitres of cooking gas every month. Interestingly 80 per cent of crude oil requirement of India is imported and remaining 20 per cent (37.46 million metric tonnes) is produced in India.
