Kohima, July 1 (EMN): Bethel Higher Secondary School and TM Government Higher Secondary School (HSS) hammered their opponent in the second round to keep their hopes alive in the tournament and entered the quarterfinals of the ongoing 1st Kohima District Inter-School Football tournament, jointly organised by Kohima Royal Club and School Education department at Kohima local ground on Saturday.
In the first match, Bethel HSS thrashed Charity School 7-0 in a goal fest encounter and moved into the quarterfinals. Despite playing against a young team, Bethel HSS wasted much of their opportunities in the first half as they found the net only in 27th minute.
Bethel HSS could have taken the lead in the 10th minute when the referee awarded a penalty but Tingbadingwangbe failed to convert the spot-kick. He also hit the woodwork twice in the first half but in the second half it was a different story, from a villain to hero, he completed his hat-trick in 24 minutes time when he scored the goals in the 45th, 57th and 69th minutes respectively. With the hat-trick, Tingbadingwangbe became the second hat trick scorer of the tournament.
Bethel ran the riot in the second half with Tingbadingwangbe’s hat-trick, Fredick brace, and Yhunzelo goal. With the win, Bethel HSS will lock horns with Mt. Sinai in the quarter final on July 5.
In the second match, TM Govt HSS registered an easy win over Stella HSS by 4-0 and entered into the quarterfinals.
Sloppy defence from Stella HSS helped TM Government HSS in a thumping victory. The team took early lead in 9th minute through Temo, and Apong doubled the lead in 30th minute to end the first half with 2-0. Murenkiu scored the third goal in the 53rd minute and Kethovizo rounded the fourth goal in the 56th minute in the second half.
Stella HSS also got a chance to score a consolation goal in the 61st minute but Tungphoh missed the spot kick and ended in a humiliating defeat. Stella HSS failed to breach the defence as TM Government HSS goalie was kept quiet for the entire match.
With the win, TM Government HSS will clash with Ministers' Hill Baptist HSS in the quarterfinals match on July 6.
After the match, Stella HSS players voluntarily cleaned up the galleries.
