Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung Sushil Kumar Patel on Thursday said that the need of the hour for the northeastern region of India, one of the biodiversity hotspots of the world is to take up and ponder over the issue of development versus the need for environmental protection. While addressing the a National seminar on “Globalization, Development & Environment with special reference to North-East India,” at I. Ihoshe Kinimi Hall of Nagaland University’s Lumami campus, Patel suggested that for a sustainable development, the use of resource should be in such a manner that the availability of resources would not hamper the forthcoming generations. The event was organized by the Nagaland University Teachers Association (L)
The official also said that globalization had created huge leaps in the sphere of economy, life-style changes and inter-cultural exchange were we cannot say no to development and globalization.
However he lamented that because of uncontrolled development people have turned a blind eye to the environment. It has worsened the issue of climate change, global warming, and frequent natural disasters that are knocking at our door, he said.
Referring Prime Minister Narendar Modi’s words “India’s North East is truly a Natural Economic Zone (NEZ),” during his visit to Nagaland last December, he reiterated that was high time for the people to “latch on to the opportunity and not only sustainably use the resource available at our disposal but also to safe guard the flora and faunal diversity of this region.”
Also, Nagaland University’s Vice Chancellor Prof BK Knowar has maintained that due to globalization, the North Eastern regions of India had been effected especially in the area of production. More goods come from outside and ‘fewer goods go outside,’ he lamented. In this connection, he has suggested that an in-depth deliberation was needed to ‘sort out the problem.’
Saying NER states cannot produce enough foods for self-sustenance as well as to maintain food security, he asserted that, “We are in need another Green revolution,” and called upon the scholars and academicians to dedicate 100 percents of their time in frame manner to address the issue.
Deputy Director of ICSSR of Shillong, Dr. CJ Thomas, delivered the key note address, on theme of the seminar, during the launch of the event. The event will conclude on March 20.
