DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER, 8
The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Tuesday stated that the “deplorable road conditions across Nagaland” have exceeded all levels of tolerance and that it could not be ignored anymore. An NPCC press statement today noted that no district headquarters is connected with black-topped roads while the “omnipresent potholes” have become knee deep. “It has cost the economy of the people in multiple forms accompanied with multiple taxes.
“Accidents due to deplorable road conditions have occurred on almost all the roads affecting transportation of goods and services. We are all aware that roadways are the only alternative since we don’t have airways, railways, or waterways.”
It is not understood why the state governent has ignored this issue for so long, the NPCC said. “It is also not understood how the issue has not pricked the consciousness of the Minister and responsible officers who are paid from the public exchequer to maintain the roads. Perhaps, because there is less commission in maintaining, they are concentrating on the new roads.
“But to the people, new roads are not the priority now, rather, connectivity of at least one black-top road to the district headquarters with stable feeder roads, are required. In the view of NPCC, this should be the priority of the state.”
While lauding the BRO for their works in the state, the NPCC however noted that even the BRO has not been able to provide innovative technologies to give permanent structures to prevent sinking zones and stabilize landslide areas, nor have we seen the use of modern machineries. “We do not find any reason why Nagaland should be left behind the nation particularly in providing roads. BRO should not think that they are not accountable and answerable to the people. NPCC demands that potholes should be corrected before the end of October 2015. NPCC will continue to monitor and if necessary, we shall call the people of the State to press for the demand.”
