Khonoma, Oct 11 (EMN): A week-long training on disaster management and environment protection, organised by the Angami Youth Organisation (AYO), is underway at Khonoma village, 15 km away from the State capital.
Over hundred of AYO volunteers from all the Angami villages, representing the four AYO units including CYO, NAYO, SAYO and WAYO, are attending the training which commenced on October 9 at Kezieke, a few km above Khonoma village.
The week-long training, which will culminate on October 14, is aimed at imparting proper training to community level youth who are usually the first responders in times of accidents, forest fires and natural disasters.
The training programme is being organised in collaboration with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Civil Defence and Home Guard, and the Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
The first phase of training on disaster preparedness and first aid concluded today, for which a short service was also held this evening. During the programme, NSDMA also handed out certificates to all the trainees.
The training on disaster management was conducted under the supervision of a team of officials and personnel from the District Disaster Management Authority, Kohima, and also personnel from the Civil Defence and Home Guard.
Talking to Eastern Mirror, AYO president Neinguvotuo Krose and convenor of the training committee, Metekhrielie Mejura informed that the AYO trainees will be assisting the NSDMA not only as first responders, but as and when the department organises training programmes in the near future.
The second phase of the AYO training will begin on October 12.
