Dimapur, April 13 (EMN): A two-day awareness programme on ‘Judicious use of groundwater and rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge of groundwater’ organised the department of Geology and Mining, Dimapur, got underway in Dimapur on Tuesday.
Awareness programmes would be held at different locations including Lengrijan, Landmark, Kevijau Colony and Diphupar A village respectively during the two-day programme.
Speaking at the programme held at Landmark colony council hall on Tuesday, the director of Geology and Mining, S Manen, stated that the programme was of paramount importance especially in Dimapur because more than 95% of the population in the city were dependent on groundwater. He added that the department had been organising such programmes on a regular interval.
He also appealed to the leaders present at the programme to sensitise other members in areas on the importance of conserving groundwater. Stating that groundwater was available at 40-50 feet some 15-20 years ago back, he however stated that it had become difficult to get water even at around 200 feet today. He cited an instance at Indisen in Dimapur, wherein they have dug 680 feet but without any water.
“We all know that the water has gone down so low. Groundwater is necessary for many purposes but firstly use it for drinking and then for irrigation purposes and then only use it for industrial purposes,” he said.
He has attributed to over exploitation of underground water for domestic, constructions, industrial and agricultural use.
“As an individual we can make a difference by using less water whenever possible and adopt rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge of groundwater,” he added.
