Dimapur, April 7 (EMN): Atu Zumvu, currently serving as a Sub-Divisional Police Officer in Kohima, was on Thursday night, awarded the Shaurya Chakra in a glittering function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
The Shaurya Chakra is an Indian military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice while not engaged in direct action with the enemy. It may be awarded to civilians as well as military personnel, sometimes posthumously. It is the peacetime equivalent of the Vir Chakra. It is generally awarded for Counter-Insurgency Operations and actions against the enemy during peace-time. It is third in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards and comes after the Ashoka Chakra and the Kirti Chakra.
It is also the highest military award in the country. He was given the award in recognition of shooting down 3 National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) outfit members.
Quite curiously, even though the award ceremony was concluded on Thursday night, the Nagaland police establishment was yet to dispatch any statements on the same. Atu is the first Naga police officer to bag the award.
