Dimapur, May 24 (EMN): Agricultural Technology Management Authority (ATMA) under Tening Block in Peren district carried out various activities for the benefit of farmers from May 13 to 23.
The activities undertaken included Kisan Ghosti (field visit), training and demonstration on post harvest management of potatoes, pest management particularly on Fall Army Worm (FAW), and mulching practices.
On May 13, ATMA team organised a Kisan Ghostis (Field visit) in Old Tesen village. The farmers participated in the discussion and expressed their satisfaction with potato cultivation.
On May 14, training and demonstration on post-harvest management of potatoes was conducted in Old Tesen village with Dr. Zeileigai Ndang, SDAO, Tening, as the resource person. He emphasised on the importance of good quality planting materials for better production.
A food security group under the nomenclature Kesuisam was set up on May 14 in New Tesen village with the primary focus on potato cultivation.
A training and demonstration on Fall Army Worm (FAW) was conducted for the farmers of Tening village on May 20. The training included identifying the pest and inspecting the field for infestation. Farmers were advised to practice deep ploughing before cultivation to control emergence of FAW. Use of neem oil and egg paratisoid Trichogramma cards was recommended. Farmers were advised to use chemical emamectin benzoate under careful supervision and appropriate dosage as last resort.
A field inspection was also carried out on the same day. The farmers have responded positively to the training and provided feedback and queries regarding the management practices. A sample of the neem oil and emamectin benzoate was provided to Namik, farmer friend.
On May 23, a demonstration on mulching practices was imparted to the farmers of Tening village. The topic covered use of mulching materials like straw and sawdust to conserve the soil moisture, prevent soil erosion and control the emergence of weeds.
