ATMA Niuland organised a skill training programme on vermicomposting for rural youth under the STRY initiative.

DIMAPUR — The Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Niuland, Aghunaqa block, organised a 25-day skill training programme on vermicomposting as a self-employment venture under the Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) initiative from March 20 to April 14.
The programme aimed at equipping rural youth with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in converting organic waste into nutrient-rich compost using earthworms.
According to an update, vermicomposting was highlighted as a low-cost and eco-friendly enterprise with growing demand in organic farming.
During the training, resource persons Dr Harendra Verma, Scientist, ICAR, Jharnapani, and Dr. Moatoshi Jamir, SRF, introduced the participants to various aspects of vermicomposting, including the selection of raw materials, preparation of composting beds, and proper management of moisture, aeration, and hygiene.

Field-based sessions were conducted at Khutovi village, which allowed trainees to actively participate in setting up units and monitoring the composting process.
Dr. Ashwini Ananda, Scientist, AICRP Vegetable Crops SAS:NU, also guided the participants on different stages of decomposition, care of earthworms, and techniques to ensure quality compost production. The trainees also learned about vermiwash preparation and its benefits.
Apart from technical skills, the programme highlighted the business potential of vermicomposting. Sessions on cost estimation, marketing, and income generation encouraged participants to adopt it as a viable self-employment option.
The training concluded with a review session, where participants shared their experiences and received guidance on continuing the practice independently.
