KOHIMA — As the nation prepares to celebrate National Sports Day on August 29 in honour of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, young athletes in Kohima gathered on Wednesday for an Athletics Meet at Indira Gandhi Stadium (IGS).

The event was organised by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, Government of Nagaland, with participation from around 200 students representing nine schools in Kohima. Competitions were held in two groups—Classes 7-8 and Classes 9-10—for both boys and girls, across track and field events.

Director of Youth Resources and Sports, Kethosituo Sekhose, said the meet was held to mark National Sports Day 2025 and encourage students to adopt sports as part of a healthy and disciplined lifestyle while also excelling in academics.

He explained that the event also aimed at scouting and nurturing young talents who could be groomed into elite athletes. Similar athletics meets are being conducted across the country to commemorate the occasion.
